“The whole thing is a symphony – the proportions so perfect – the details so in tune”
-Nathalie Ashe Whitfield Winn (13th Child), talking about Gaineswood
Gaineswood is the venue for Heritage Days each year during April. With the support of the Black Belt Community Foundation, this step back into nineteenth century everyday life is attended by fourth graders in the Black Belt. The activities of the two day event are coordinated with the Alabama History curriculum. Approximately 300 students and teachers attend each year.
Demopolis High School Prom
Gaineswood is honored to have been chosen, for the past few years, as the venue for the Demopolis High School Junior/Senior Prom. After the lead-out on the front portico of the mansion, a sit-down dinner and dance is held in a large and elegantly decorated tent. The beautifully lighted Gaineswood serves as a backdrop for the entire evening.
Harvest FestEach year during the month of October, Gaineswood is the site for a day of family games, fall contests, and specially priced tours of the house. The ever popular Gaineswood Ghost Story, complete with special effects, is presented in the basement.
Candlelight Evening – a Christmas on the River Event
On the first weekend of December, the city of Demopolis has hosted the Christmas on the River Event for over 45 years. Friday night of COTR, Gaineswood, along with Bluff Hall and Lyon Hall, hosts open house featuring Christmas decorations of the nineteenth century. Visitors enjoy entertainment and light refreshments as they stroll through the home. Our beautiful Gaineswood Belles, dressed in period attire, serve as hostesses during the evening.
